I have had to repeat it a few times, because it didn’t really sink in at first. The Education Secretary has a personal dislike of a classic of American literature and it is therefore not on the syllabus for GCSE’s. It is being ushered out alongside Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ and Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ and replaced with a core of British books, the majority of which are pre-20th century. This is not as a result of considered research, this is entirely based on the personal opinion of the Secretary of State for Education.
